Rain When I Die - Live with Jar of Flies

Powerful chorus, odd meter, weird fills, what more do you need?! Rain When I Die is a newer one for me and I still have some details to get down. This performance was the band’s third time playing it live. The form is simple but the 7/4 groove is wacky but well written to the riff.

The opening fill took me a second (actually multiple seconds) to get down when I first started learning it just due to the timing against the bass line. Once you get through the verses it’s just powerhouse rock and it’s awesome hitting the top of the chorus.

Coming out of the bridge you have a nice drum break which is something I am still perfecting at this point. I always aim for getting the vibe or essence of the soloistic parts first before getting really obsessive over every note. Better to focus on making the music sound and feel good than being “note perfect”.
